Summary of Principal Responsibilities
The Assistant Regional Director (AARD) is a key member of the West Regional management team and assists the Regional Director in providing strategic and creative leadership in the West Region, a 13-state area in which there are 11 programs.
The AARD supervises regional staff, and participates in AFSC-wide staff groups to help assure organization-wide program coherence, collaboration and program excellence. Additionally, the AARD assists in management of the region’s financial resources including grant management and compliance; and participates in regional and organizational fundraising.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities: The key responsibilities of the Assistant Regional Director include the following:
Program Planning and Direction
Foster staff competency in developing and implementing sound program plans.
Encourage collaboration among staff members and across regions of AFSC for the sharing of analysis, strategies, methods and opportunities for joint intra- and inter-regional programs.
Staff Management, Development and Support
Supervise program and administrative staff, as assigned.
Cultivate a work environment that attracts and maintains a diverse and highly motivated staff.
Promote teamwork, common purpose, and continuous professional growth.
Assist in ensuring effective regional staff hiring, orientation and training.
Ensure that staff members under direct supervision follow all AFSC policies and procedures.
Affirmative Action
- Assist the Regional Director in collaboration with the Human Resources Department, the Chief Diversity Officer, and other staff as appropriate, to apply AFSC’s diversity and inclusion efforts and our Affirmative Action policies.
Financial Management
Assist with the development and management of program and overall regional budgets. Develop grants budgets and provide oversight for grants management.
Assist in ensuring regional compliance with AFSC financial policies, procedures, and directives.
Assist in ensuring good stewardship of AFSC resources.
Fundraising
Collaborate with the Regional Director and Development staff to develop and meet fundraising goals.
Support regional efforts to secure grants and collaborate in individual donor identification, cultivation and solicitations.
Assist in compliance with organizational grant guidelines and standards.
Outreach and Communications
Assist in maintaining contact with regional governance and volunteer committees and with members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Attend regional and national Quaker gatherings as assigned, and encourage Friends’ participation in AFSC activities.
Assist in ensuring that public communications originating from staff and volunteers in the region, including web and social media, are accurate and in accord with AFSC policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Baccalaureate degree in non-profit management, social science or related field or equivalent work experience.
Experience:
Minimum four years of management experience, including supervising professional staff.
Demonstrated experience managing in the non-profit sector.
Demonstrated leadership experience in program and budget development and management.
Demonstrated experience in staff and work team supervision and development, including use of coaching and mentoring techniques.

Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations of AFSC regarding issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.
Broad understanding of social and economic justice issues. Expertise in youth, immigrant rights, healing/criminal justice, and/or food justice programs a plus.
Compatibility with AFSC’s approach to grassroots organizing, and strategies for strengthening community-based capacities and efforts toward peace and justice.
Demonstrated ability to connect with diverse audiences and to influence situations using tact and diplomacy; ability to persuade and motivate others.
Strong interpersonal skills, with knowledge of and experience in using consultative decision-making processes; experience working under pressure and adapting to changing situations and priorities.
Experience working collaboratively with individuals, groups and organizations.
Ability to travel frequently and to work some weekends and evenings.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent computer skills.
