Background

The UN Women JPO Programme equips outstanding young leaders with the skills and experience required to reach the United Nations’ 5TH Sustainable Development Goal (SDG): achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. As a pathway into the world of development and gender equality, the programme offers young professionals excellent exposure to multilateral cooperation and sustainable development while providing a valuable entry point into the UN system.

During their assignments, JPOs benefit from the guidance of experienced UN Women staff members and are actively involved in supporting the design and implementation of UN Women’s programs within UN Women’s headquarters, regional or country offices.

Job Purpose:

The UN Women Multi Country Office (MCO) in Morocco supports the achievement of women’s human rigths, gender equality and women empowerment in three countries: Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The Junior Professional Officer (JPO) will work under the direct guidance and supervision of the UN Women Representative and the Programme Management Specialist. He/she will be actively involved in the identification, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the MCO’s programs in its core areas, including women’s rights protection, gender equality, ending violence against women and trafficking in women, women’s economic empowerment, , the Introduction of planning and Gender Responsive Budget and governance.

The JPO will more specifically contribute to:

  • Supporting national institutions and NGOs in their efforts to end violence against women and girls
  • Gender Mainstreaming and support to the design and implementation of gender responsive public policies in several sectors
  • Enhancing the fight against unequal access to the Market Labor by supporting the design and implementation of dedicated public policies and mechanisms
  • Achieving gender equality within public and private companies by engaging employers and supporting the design and implementation of dedicated measures and policies
  • Improving women economic empowerment through both the building of a performing ecosystem and the design and implementation of innovative entrepreneurship projects notably in the green economy
  • In this respect, the JPO will support the design, implementation and evaluation of key partnerships with CSO, institutional stakeholders, international organizations, UN agencies or programs, bilateral and multilateral cooperation. The JPO is expected to deliver high quality results and display a high level of professionalism.

Reporting structure and partners

The Junior Professional Officer (JPO) will work under the direct guidance and supervision of the UN Women Representative and the Programme Management Specialist.

He / She will work daily with a team of 27 experienced staff members (including program managers, operational staff members, communication responsible) located in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.

He/She will take part and prepare meetings with key internal and external stakeholders and partners in the region

Duties and Responsibilities

Actively support the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the UN Women MCO Morocco’s projects & programs:

  • Provide technical support to UN Women MCO Morocco in implementing global norms and policies, including CEDAW, Beijing DPA, post-2015 agenda, as well as UN Human Rights Council UPR and Special procedures recommendations
  • Support UN Women MCO Morocco’s coordination role on gender equality and women’s empowerment within the United Nations System at country level, including through support to joint programming and to the UN Gender Thematic Group
  • Support the UN Women MCO Morocco in designing new projects/programmes on women’s leadership and political participation, women’s economic empowerment, eliminating violence against women and girls, gender-responsive planning and budgeting.
  • Provide quality control for donor reporting
  • Support the team in preparing high level events, consultations and other events

Actively contribute to UN Women MCO Morocco’s partnership strategy

  • Provide support, technical assistance and capacity-building to UNW MCO’s partners including national institutions and civil society organizations
  • Support the implementation of new/innovative partnerships, including with the private sector
  • Develop advocacy & capacity-building materials (e.g. background/advocacy papers on women’s human rights issues)

Actively contribute to Knowledge Management and Communication

  • Support the design and implementation of tools and processes aiming at improving the MCO’s Knowledge Management sharing
  • Prepare policy/programme briefs on UN Women MCO’s areas of work and/or on the situation of gender equality and women’s empowerment in the country
  • In coordination with the Communication specialist, draft quality and substantive papers to update UNW MCO Website
  • Identify and document best practices and ensure their dissemination at the subregional (Maghreb) and regional (Arab States) levels

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in political or social sciences, gender and development, international development, development related disciplines, economics or public policy or other specialization in economic or social science fields

Experience

  • A minimum of two years of experience in development/public policies and strategies field
  • Ideally, on-the-ground work experience gender equality and women’s rights field at the international level, preferably in developing countries;

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in both French and English is required

Other desirable education, languages and work experience

  • Describe any additional qualifications:
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Package

  • This post is opened in the context of the JPO Programme sponsored by the Government of Belgium and is addressed exclusively to nationals of Belgium
