Summary of Principal Responsibilities

The Communications Intern will assist the Communications Department in AFSC’s outreach to Quakers, alumni, and faith groups.

Over the course of the internship, the intern will learn about best practices in email, social media, event management, data management, and many aspects of public relations. They will gain experience in a multi-disciplined team, have opportunities to engage in planning and coordination meetings, and help promote best practices to a global staff.

Functions/Responsibilities:

The key responsibilities of the Communications Intern include the following:

  1. Maintain lists of Quaker meeting/church liaisons and alumni. Coordinate with program contacts to receive lists in proper fashion. Coordinate with Donor Services Unit in maintaining the list in our constituent management relationship systems
  2. Work closely with the Director of Friends Relations and regional administrative staff to establish and maintain a regular email communication plan with core Quaker contacts.
  3. Organize, ship, and receive back yearly meeting display materials; ship out materials to Quaker and alumni meetings, events, and organizations as needed.
  4. Support the staff team coordinating the annual AFSC Corporation meeting and alumni gathering in April. Handle some administrative tasks.
  5. Assist the Social Media Specialist with relevant posts on social media to Quaker and alumni groups.
  6. With Director of Friends Relations, organize and administer semi-annual Zoom calls with AFSC’s Quaker contacts (including meeting/church liaisons and Corporation members).
  7. Provide editing and proofreading support for communications that appear in a range of platforms.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

  1. Skilled at organizing time and projects.
  2. Familiarity with the Religious Society of Friends and peace and social justice movements is preferable.
  3. Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication
  5. Understanding of social media use
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work constructively and collaboratively with people in a wide variety of professional positions.
  7. Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.

Compensation: $15.00/hour– Non- Exempt – There are no medical, dental, life insurance, short-term or long-term insurance benefits with this position; AFSC participates in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
